Awards

RESISTANCE (formerly known as VERA) has won awards or received nominations in over 20 international film festival screenplay competitions and labs, including:

** Squaw Valley Screenwriters Program (made possible with a grant from the National Endowment for the Arts, and the Academy Foundation of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences), 2013. The intensive week-long program focuses on work in progress and individual attention by award-winning writers and writer/directors. The goal is to bring the screenplays closer to production.

** Atlanta Film Festival’s Inaugural Screenplay Competition, Winner. The prize for winning was participation in a weekend retreat with a group of renowned writing, directing, and producing mentors. McCarthy's mentors were Joy Lusco Kecken (NBC's "Homicide" and HBO's "The Wire") and Michael Lucker (VAMPIRE IN BROOKLYN).

RESISTANCE is based on the true story of Vera Laska who, as a teenager, defied statistics and lasted three years as a WWII Czechoslovak Resistance fighter (instead of the average six months); survived Auschwitz as a political prisoner; and escaped the Nazis during a death march.
